The Sir William Henry Bragg Building is located in the Northeast Quarter Campus of Leeds University and allows for the integration of the University disciplines of Engineering, Physics & Astronomy and Computing.

Site restrictions made this project ideal for a DfMA approach of which Peikko solutions played an important part. 145nr DELTABEAM® Composite Beams were supplied to the site which despite the access issues the frame was completed in just 32 weeks with 22 operatives.

The basement construction needed to be watertight as critical equipment is housed there, this was achieved within the target time of 12 weeks. Due to the nature of the building vibration performance was a key design metric and one of the main reasons why DELTABEAM® was chosen after the experience gained from the Jeffery Cheah Biomedical Centre (Project Capella).

The target response factor of VC-A was exceeded. The floor was a 175mm deep prestressed solid plank with a 225mm deep structural topping.

For sequencing purposed the topping was to be cast after construction of the frame so special internal diaphragm plates were fabricated into the DELTABEAM® to allow the local casting of the infill concrete around the column connections to transfer the vertical loads. Peikko column shoes and anchor bolts were incorporated into square, rectangular and circular precast columns.
